Be a Solution Source
by Jim Cathcart
Want to know how NOT to get business right now? Do what everyone else is doing!
Everyone seems to be offering “recession” sales, discounts, one-time-only deals. They all seem to lead with some reminder that “times are tough” or “despite the down economy”. The net effect of these appeals and reminders is that it brings the energy down.
People don’t need sympathy today, they need solutions!!!!! Be their Solution Source.
Find out what they need, want, fear, hope for, etc. and help them get their desires. Don’t offer discounts, offer reliable results. Show people the light at the end of the tunnel, lead them toward their dreams, give them hope.
And, for Heaven’s sake, don’t hope against the worst (I hope we don’t get destroyed), instead hope FOR the best (I hope we find even more sales than we expected.) Hope should be used as a way of visualizing what you want rather than a cushion against what you fear.
So, when you show up on someone’s telephone screen, computer screen or doorstep, make sure you look like Good News! Bring optimism, hope, smiles and solutions. Get real, and show people that you care. Lose the old sales pitches and really talk with people. Listen to their concerns and then show them a better way.
People who come bearing solutions are always welcomed. Be a Solution Source!
No, you don’t need to bring wine and cheese but a big happy smile might help.

Jim,
You’re 100% correct about being “positive” and the source for “solutions” when it comes to the new economy. One thing I’ve noticed in some of the organizations that I work with is that the employees are scared right now. It’s easy to see why… Turn on the news anytime of day and all you’ll hear is doom/gloom (It’s sexy and sizzles better than hope/optimism!) Now more than ever leaders need to “step-up” their game. Perhaps they should try wine and cheese!
Enjoy your blog… Keep up the great work.
