This podcast was recorded by iLearningGlobal.tv in 2008. It is 22 minutes long but I don’t think I’d change a minute of it even if I were recording anew today.

I talk about how to face tough economic times, how to build a big career even when you are starting with virtually nothing, and much more. In it you will hear my personal story and feel my enthusiasm about what is possible for YOU.

Please take the time to listen to this message and share it with others who could use a boost of motivation or confidence. I want to be a resource for you in all the ways that I can. Then drop me a note and let’s stay connected.

I just got off the phone/computer from one the most enjoyable calls I’ve ever made.

Stephanie Charl Schule, a colleague of mine in Hannover, Germany invited me to address a meeting of the folks who are involved in iLearningGlobal.tv there. It was 5pm for them and 8am for me. So I was able to make the call from my computer by simply plugging in an external microphone and using the built in camera on the screen.

As my regular readers know, I’m one of the founding faculty of iLearningGlobal.tv and many of my training videos are featured on their website worldwide. When Steffi contacted me she said that I had many followers in Germany and she’d like to have me address their meeting via Skype call.

Her husband, Paul-Martin Schule, called me and confirmed our connection and the next thing I knew I was looking at Steffi in front of her computer screen with a large screen in the background showing ME! They had a meeting room with about 60 people in attendance and she had it set up to show me on a large screen while she interviewed me. We also took questions and comments from the audience. The sound quality of the connection was excellent.

Here is what the video looked like to them:

Steffi had sent me an outline of probable questions that she would ask me and I sent her my replies to each, so that she could translate the answers into German in advance of the meeting.

During the meeting as I answered each question and told short stories to illustrate, I would pause occasionally so that she could do a live translation for those who didn’t speak English. It really worked. The audience broke into applause on a number of occasions and seemed to truly connect with my message.

At the end of the event we took a little diversion when she asked me how I kept myself motivated. I showed her my guitar, one of two that I keep in my office. Then she asked me to play it. I played a piece of a song and she said the audience wanted more. So I played and sang my own song, Riding Free, plus a John Denver and a Neil Diamond song. They sang along with me, from the other side of the world! That produced much applause and laughter on both sides of the ocean. Great fun!

I asked her to turn the computer around so that I could see the audience and when she did, they gave me a standing ovation! It truly touched my heart. What a wonderful way to connect with people and a perfect way to start this day. By the way, today is the birth date of Cavett Robert, founder of the National Speakers Association. NSA members nationwide are encouraged to spend this day coaching and training others to become better communicators. Tonight I’ll be speaking as keynoter for the 75th anniversary banquet of the Toastmasters International Ventura California club. Thanks for following my blog and please let me know when I can be of service to you.

“Abundance vs Scarcity Mentality”

iLearningGlobal is pleased to present Jim Cathcart as the featured faculty member on this Saturday’s Millionaire Mentor Session!

With over 32 years of professional speaking around the world, Jim Cathcart is one of the best known and most award-winning motivational speakers in the business.

After hearing Earl Nightingale on the radio one day in 1972, Jim was inspired to change his life. While working as a government clerk in the Urban Renewal Agency, he determined to learn psychology and master the process of self-improvement. Through years of fanatical dedication to this new quest he learned new skills, became a certified trainer for a variety of programs, read stacks of books, attended countless seminars and volunteered thousands of hours to civic organizations. In this process he moved from clerk, to manager, to leader, to trainer, to author and professional speaker.

Today, he is listed in the professional Speaker Hall of Fame, is a recipient of the prestigious Golden Gavel Award (along with Earl Nightingale, Art Linkletter, Zig Ziglar and many others), has been the president of the National Speakers Association and received the Cavett Award for a lifetime of service. He has authored 14 books and scores of recorded programs.

Please join us on Saturday to hear Jim speak on “Abundance vs. Scarcity Mentality”. This will be a spectacular educational session you won’t want to miss! We look forward to having you on the call.

Jim Cathcart Full Bio

He has delivered more than 2,700 presentations to audiences in every state of the US, most provinces of Canada and countries from Scotland to Singapore. Two of his most recent international engagements were for thousands of business leaders in Bogota’, Colombia and Caracas, Venezuela!

A researcher and philosopher at heart, Jim is also a down to earth regular guy. He has worked in warehouses, driven trucks, sold donuts door to door, been a bank teller, played guitar in night clubs and beer pubs, and sold motorcycles.

Someone recently said, “Jim Cathcart is what ‘Fonzie’ would have been if he’d gone to business school.”

Jim was an insurance agent for many years, an Army officer and a bill collector who, while in his twenties, had to repossess log trucks in the mountains of northern Arkansas. From this varied background he decided in 1972 to become an authority on the subject of motivation and through decades of dedication and hard work, made it happen.

After hearing Earl Nightingale on the radio one day in 1972, Jim was inspired to change his life. While working as a government clerk in the Urban Renewal Agency he determined to learn psychology and master the process of self-improvement.

Today he is listed in the professional Speaker Hall of Fame, is a recipient of the prestigious Golden Gavel Award (along with Earl Nightingale, Art Linkletter, Zig Ziglar and many others), has been the president of the National Speakers Association and received the Cavett Award for a lifetime of service. He has authored 14 books and scores of recorded programs.

In 2007 he was listed as one of The Top 100 Minds on Personal Development by Leadership Excellence magazine. The San Diego chapter of the National Speakers Association renamed their member of the year award “The Jim Cathcart Service Award” and the Greater Los Angeles chapter gave Jim the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003. In 2008 he was inducted as one of the “Legends of the Speaking Profession.”

Jim Cathcart is an active motivational speaker and prolific author plus an executive coach to numerous high-achievers. In his personal time he plays Rock n Roll guitar, rides his motorcycle on the twistiest roads he can find and runs the trails of the mountains near his home at least twice each week. He’s a proud parent and grandparent and an active civic leader.

He serves on the board of advisors to the School of Business at both Pepperdine University and California Lutheran University. His messages can be seen on iLearningGlobal.tv and on TSTN.com.

Please join us on this call and tell others about it. Spread the word so that we can get more people to embrace an Abundance Mindset and get away from the Scarcity Thinking that takes away opportunity. Send the link to this email to those who would benefit from hearing it.

For those who want to keep this learning alive, please join us for the “Breakthrough to Prosperity” Seminar Series seven times a year here in the “101 Corridor”.

I have the happy problem of receiving more requests for mentoring, coaching and training than I can fulfill. Not that I have large-fee speaking engagements spilling out the door but many friends, clients, colleagues and neighbors have asked me to assist them or their companies. They have smaller budgets than the conventions that typically book me and I’ve had trouble figuring out how to help my friends without breaking the bank, theirs or mine.

Now I have a great solution! No, it’s not “dropping my price”. It is much better than that. I have created an online Television Channel, Motivation.tv. This site has several short video presentations by me, some live in front of an audience, some in a studio but all of them are targeted to help people learn to Motivate – themselves, others, customers, prospects or audiences. And best of all, it’s free. Yep, free. No charge. Zip, nada, just sitting there waiting to be accessed. How do you like the price? :-)

Of course I hope to turn it into a big profit center, but right now it is your way to get my training without a fee. Here’s the plan: Visit the site today. Explore it. Watch the videos and Select one that you think your team would enjoy. Then book a half hour meeting and show them the video. It may help if you can show it on a larger screen than your laptop, but even a laptop will do.

After the show, ask them what ideas stood out. Have each person tell you something they heard or thought of when watching my message. Discuss what that means to them and how they can apply it right away. This should be a very stimulating conversation! Keep notes of the ideas and follow through.

Then drop me a note to share your results. I’d love to hear from you. For those who want more from me; the best resource is a combination of my messages on iLearningGlobal.tv followed by telephone coaching sessions between me and you. I’ve created a couple of dozen presentations of less than ten minutes length that you can access from iLearningGlobal in High Definition on your computer. Here is the link to one of them: http://www.ilearningglobal.tv/Vusion/?pl=playlists/faculty_sample.xml.

And, here’s the 14 minute overview presentation about iLG and how it works.

iLG is a subscription channel like HBO or Starz, except that you can choose the time and title you want. You get 24/7 access to hundreds of presentations by the top speakers in the country on topics that range from Sales to Communication to Motivation, Leadership, Dealing with Change, Stress Control, Negotiation, Fitness, Nutrition, Accounting & Tax Strategies, Philosophy, Customer Loyalty, Relationships, and even programming for Teens. It’s the biggest bargain and greatest training resource I’ve seen in 33 years of full-time professional speaking. For $79.95 (without a contract) you get an unending stream of the programs you want, when you want them. Just tune in from any internet device and select the topic or presenter you want, and voila! you have the presentation.

This allows you to save thousands over the previous methods for training. You decide what subjects need to be addressed, select the presenters you like best for your purposes, and click “play.” Ten minutes later you can choose another or just take some notes to put the ideas into action. Use your iPhone, your laptop or plug in to the TV and see it on the bigger screen. All in High-Definition and in bite sized pieces.

Give it a try and then call or email me so that we can set up a series of chats to take the new ideas to the next level in real-world application. I’m eager to help you and look forward to having you as a regular viewer on both Motivation.tv and iLearningGlobal.

Where do you run when everything seems to be scary?

I watched some news programs last night with the predictable panic-inducing content. They were pointing out all the things we cannot control and how disastrous they might become. At the end of the show I was getting anxious!

Well, wait a minute. If I spend my time monitoring Congress, the President, International Affairs, Wars & Atrocities around the globe, fluctuations in Weather conditions and the rest of the news… what good am I doing? Seriously, what possible value can I get from staying acutely aware of these things? (I’ll pause while you ponder that one.)

<This is me pausing>

I’m not suggesting that you ignore the news, nor that you dissociate from what is going on in the world. What I AM suggesting is that you and I need to control the in-flow of information we receive. We need to take Conscious, Intentional and Relentless control over what we expose ourselves to and how much of it we ingest at a given time.

“Indoctrination” is what this process is called. It is a systematic method of molding a person’s thoughts and feelings through control of the information they are exposed to. When we habitually listen to one or two sources for our daily information we naturally will become shaped by that point-of-view. It’s a form of brainwashing.

Everybody is being indoctrinated. Everybody. It’s either being done by others without your awareness or, through your choices of what to hear and read, with you awareness. It is either intentional or unintentional but it is always going on. I say it’s time for you to take control over your own indoctrination.

Let’s begin with the underlying question: What do you want? Once you get clear on what you want then the ways to get it start to become evident. So ask yourself, what do you want to have, to experience, to feel, to do and to be? What kind of person do you want to be?

The kind of person you decide to become will determine the potential futures you are likely to have. To have you must do. To do you must be. To be you must choose and then act on your choices.

First thing in the morning what do you feed your mind? Music, talk radio, quiet reflection, reading, prayer, what? Once you are dressed and fed, what goes into your mind? In your car do you play the radio, listen to podcasts on your iPod, sing to yourself, what? During your daily workout do you watch TV? Which channels? What does that bring you? Keep up this process as you mentally walk through your day. Notice from dawn till dark what you allow into your mind. Be sure to also notice whom you spend time with. They have influence too.

Now, reflect on the above and Notice More. Notice the patterns, the theme in the information sources. Ask yourself, “Is this indoctrinating me to become the person I wish to be or more like someone else?” (Or even everyone else.)

Next, choose the inputs that will take you where you want to go and make them a daily routine, a new habit. Find the ways to incorporate new inputs into your morning routine, your commute, your workout, your evening unwind and your last impressions of the day.

If you’d like some good resources for this start with the “Online Store” on this website, or scan the 140+ blogposts I’ve inserted here. Sign up for the free weekly Acorn e-letter. Visit iLearningGlobal.tv and subscribe to the inspiring messages and practical lessons from all the top experts. Whatever you do, make it Conscious, Intentional and Relentless until you have achieved the results you want. Don’t abdicate control over your life to the fear-mongers, stay informed but don’t let others indoctrinate you unless you want to be like them.

Every interview I’ve done recently has led with the same inquiry, “What would you tell people who are having a tough time in the current economy?”
Here is my answer:
  1. Increase your discipline
  2. Spend more of each day in business building (sales)
  3. Be more vigilant
  4. UpServe your existing customers
  5. Build learning into all the gaps
  6. Stay humble
  7. Increase your gratitude
Increase your discipline:
When revenue is scarce and people are afraid to make purchases it becomes vital that you make use of all your resources; tools, time and people. Take a look at what time you begin your productive work each day; make it earlier. Become a strong task-master of yourself. Make sure you do your work well and promptly. Don’t allow follow-through to be delayed. Go back to the discipline you had early in your career. Be a go-getter again, develop your “productivity muscles.”
Spend more of each day in business building (sales)
In easier times you can do what you used to do, but for now you will need to increase the number of minutes in each day that you are in direct contact with someone who can say “Yes.”
Start keeping records of your sales minutes. Track your numbers each day and improve them. Your sales success will directly depend on the number of people and amount of time you devote to helping others buy. Shuffle your duties so that your administrative actions can be done during non-prime selling time. When people are accessible be sure that you are out there seeking access to them. Ask yourself, “Does what I’m doing right now lead directly to a new sale?” If not, postpone or delegate it.
Be more vigilant
There are times when we have the luxury of being lax, but this is not one of them. When the threats of a poor economy are at your door you need to be sure you don’t allow any of them in.
These include: fearful thinking, delays in decision making or taking decisive action, pessimism in all of its forms, people who drain your energy, TV shows, radio shows, newspapers and online sources that feed your fear. Get these influences under your control. Reduce your exposure to fear, doom and doubt. Increase your exposure to optimism, plans, new ideas and happiness. You will reflect the people you listen to and associate with . Control the input.
UpServe your existing customers
Ask yourself, “How can I increase my existing customers’ satisfaction?” Look for ways to add to their happiness about doing business with you. Do things that don’t cost you but still give value to them. Communicate, reach out, compliment them, reassure them, offer new tips and information, service their products, show them new uses, be on their team. Help them succeed. Do NOT seek a new sale when doing this. Accept them if they come but sustain the spirit of service as you seek to UpServe.
Build learning into all the gaps
Add learning to your wake-up time, your drive time, waiting time, and relaxation time. Use online resources like iLearningGlobal.tv and recordings, books and podcasts to help you gain new ideas and insights. Fill your day with new information and refreshers of past information. Stuff new information into all the gaps in your day. Let a CD play as you get dressed, listen to them in the car, put books on tape into your MP3 player. Learn more every day without having to spend more time doing new activities. Play the same messages over and over if they are valuable to you. Spaced repetition and multiple exposures will increase your retention.
Try new things and get even better at the old things.
Stay Humble
Humility is one of the most attractive qualities you can have. Humble people learn from everyone. They aren’t “above” doing hard work nor are they “beyond” dealing with others who don’t have much power. They are caring people who are eager to listen and learn. They share the spotlight and brag about others. They don’t interrupt with a compulsion to talk about themselves. Others love to be around them. Be one of them.
Increase your Gratitude
The most magnetic of all emotions is Gratitude. The thankful mindset draws energy to it. Think of the power of gratitude on you. How do you feel toward people who are truly grateful for what you have done for them? You are drawn even closer to them. You want to do more for them. The same is true for others. They will love your grateful spirit and seek even more ways to be helpful to you. In the “Law of Attraction” the first principle is definite purpose and the second is gratitude. Know what you want and give thanks for it even before you have received it.
The net effect of following this advice will be that you will feel more in control of your own life and career. Your clients and coworkers will find you even more pleasant to work with and the marketplace will trust you more. You may not be able to control the results you get but you can certainly control the contribution you make and the effort you invest. This investment WILL pay off! Be the kind of person others want on their team and you will get what you desire.
In the Spirit of Service,
Jim Cathcart
