Marriage Advice from 43 years together

By Jim Cathcart

At a recent wedding reception they held an elimination dance to isolate the couple that had been married the longest. Less-than-10 left the floor, then less-than-20, 30, 35, 40 and Paula and I were still dancing (alone) when they got to 43 years. Everyone else had sat down as their time frames were called and we had the distinction of being the longest married. Luckily we weren’t the “oldest” couple, just the longest wed.

The emcee asked us to take the microphone and give some longevity advice to the newly married couple. The champagne toast had preceded the dance so my ‘advice’ was more of a joking comment than a useful suggestion. Paula imparted a thought her Mom had shared with her, “Everyone has faults so find someone whose faults you can live with.” Not bad but upon reflection I think we could have served the couple better with some different advice.

In retrospect, I can see that continuing love is more about discovering and celebrating the good in each other than about overlooking our shortcomings.

So, here is my revised advice:

Make a habit of noticing what your partner does well. See it and comment on it. Show them that you appreciate the goodness in them. Be a ‘good’ finder.

Brag about your partner to others. Do this as often as is appropriate while being careful not to be obnoxious or selfish about it. Just point out the things you love in them. When I’m asked how Paula is, I often reply, “She scrumptious!” It always gets a smile and a comment.

Don’t be bashful about your affection for each other. Now, if others are often telling you to “Get A Room!” then maybe you’re overdoing it. But if you feel like holding hands, rubbing their back, or snuggling then do it where it is appropriate. P.S. It’s almost always appropriate.

When someone else starts a pity party about the faults of their spouse, change the subject or change rooms. Just walk away if all they want to do is compare wounds. The more you think about faults the more they will become the first thing you notice…and there goes the relationship.

Try to keep a mental record of all the little things your mate does for you. The folded laundry, the thoughtful messages, the text to apologize for being late, or the special treat they bring home from the store. If they tiptoe out of the bedroom so that you can sleep while they get ready for the day, notice it. You don’t have to comment on it, just notice it.

Learn to apologize early. Make a habit of clearing the emotional ‘cache’ often. Don’t carry resentments, don’t hold onto a bad mood, and don’t seek to justify your behavior when you know you were out of line or over-reacted. Just say, “I’m sorry. I don’t like the way I handled that. You didn’t deserve that. Sorry.” This will be a miraculous cure for most arguments, trust me.

Reflect. Notice your own patterns. See what you said or did and reflect on it. Ask yourself, “This is how I handled that, so how’s that working for me?” When you see unproductive patterns in yourself, change them quickly. It takes time to become a couple. Two individuals can live together miserably forever, but a loving couple is the result of each party changing just enough to make their partner a part of themselves.

Know that some patterns in your partner will never change. People are different and those differences are what make the world work. But those differences are also what irritate us over time. Determine which behaviors to tolerate and where to draw the line. Some behaviors are never acceptable. I guess this is where Paula’s Mom’s advice comes in, “Find someone whose faults you can live with.”

Set goals together. Dream aloud; create your future. Write down your plans and make them happen. Make sure one of your goals categories is: things to improve about myself. Be in a constant state of self-improvement. Learn new habits, eliminate unproductive behaviors; treat your personality as you would treat your health. Develop little behaviors that lead to good habits and will make your life more satisfying.

Above all, for a long happy marriage, learn to increase the love you have for each other in perpetuity. Do not accept the hand-me-down attitudes or expectations of relatives and friends who have less love, less health, less satisfaction, or less productivity in their lives. Pessimism is contagious and so is optimism.

Make sure that you learn to expect life to expand and improve forever. If you are still alive then there is still much good to be done. You can make this world and your marriage a better place for all participants. Don’t ever stop.

Charlie ‘Tremendous’ Jones was once asked, “How have you stayed married to Gloria for so long?” “She won’t leave me!” He replied with a smile and a laugh. So, how do you stay married forever? Don’t ever leave…don’t leave emotionally, don’t leave by criticizing, don’t leave your loving ways, don’t leave the joy that you could attain by nurturing this bond forever. May God bless your marriage.

by Sales & Marketing Expert, Jim Cathcart

Tomorrow I’m leaving for a speaking engagement in San Diego, followed by my first TEDx talk in Delray Beach, Florida. This is an exciting time for me, filled with new choices and new experiences. Have you ever done a TED or TEDx talk? They are limited to 18 minutes max and must be focused on one “idea worth sharing.”

In recent years TED has taken the adult learning world by storm. Millions of us have viewed these inspiring, entertaining and sometimes disturbing presentations from people we never would have otherwise encountered. TED has created a forum for the sharing of insights and wisdom that is unmatched in its reach. Schools are watching TED talks, businesses hold meetings around these talks; available for free via YouTube! Individuals are acquiring the discipline of incorporating these diverse lessons into each day or week. And the world is better for it.

This morning a colleague of mine, Randy Gage, sent me a message about his radical new choice. He decided to sell most of his worldly possessions and go exploring. Randy has built a massive following in the “prosperity consciousness” field and has become quite wealthy. Yet, he sold his home, his Viper sports car collection, his substantial wardrobe and set himself free to see what else life has to offer. Wow.

Imagine the boldness of that decision. Our whole worldview is rooted in possessions. We spend most of our lives acquiring tools, toys and resources. The “American Dream” has long been to acquire your own home and to own it free and clear of debt. We fantasize about ‘retirement’ from the workforce and pursuing our dreams. Well, Randy has done it. It will be fascinating to see what he learns in his next era. But what about you and me?

Most of us don’t have the financial security to just cut loose and roam. Also there are people who depend on us and to whom we are committed. So, let’s look at a more accessible version of freedom and the quest for fulfillment.

Those who have been following me for the past several years have seen how enthusiastic I’ve become about: Motorcycling, Mountain Trail Running, and Singing and Playing Guitar. At the same time I’ve continued to write, learn, speak, train, consult and coach. If any of these activities had to end I’d miss them very much. But, happily, I’ve been able to make time for them simultaneously. And I’ve had plenty of time for my family; Paula, Jim Jr., Sonya and our grandkids Jason and Amber. There have also been abundant social times with friends, neighbors and the causes we support. I guess this is my version of the ‘life balance wheel’: Mental, Physical, Family, Spiritual, Social, Financial, Career and Emotional.

Without neglecting any of these areas for long I’ve been able to live fully in each of them. How about you? When’s the last time you did a check-up to examine how fully you are living in these eight areas? Maybe today would be a good time to just do a 1 to 10 rating of – How fully have you been living in this part of your life?

In my book The Acorn Principle I explore this in more detail. It’s available in eBook version as well as print and audio. But you don’t require the book in order to do the exercise above. Just reflect on the parts of your life that need more attention, and then make some new choices to address them.

My TEDx talk is titled “Nurture Your Nature.” The essence of the message is that we must: Know ourselves, Explore ourselves, and Apply ourselves in order to grow to our full potential and have a rewarding life. I hope you will be one of those in the audience in Delray Beach this week and if not, then I encourage you to stop, reflect and notice where you’d benefit from some new choices.

And, say Bon Voyage to Randy if you see him.

Ian Berry, speaker, author and inspirational guru from Australia gave me the honor of being his guest interviewee yesterday on his Changing What’s Normal show. Here is the recording of that interview. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Please drop me a line or leave your comments here. My topic is “knowing yourself” from my book The Acorn Principle.

This is 55 minutes long and my part starts about 2 minutes in. The recording was done by Google Hangouts and the opening is a bit awkward, so skip onward to the 2 minute part to hear my interview.

By Jim Cathcart

It seems that everywhere you look today someone is railing against bullying. I saw a YouTube video today with scores of celebrities decrying bullying and saying, “No More”, “Stop it!”

I was bullied as a child and again as a young adult in the Army. I can vividly recall Tommy, Dickie and Charlie in grammar school and junior high school and how they made me feel. The memories are also clear when it comes to the tech sergeant on K.P. at Ft. Sam Houston, TX and Staff Sgt. Dykes at Ft. Polk, LA. Each of these folks treated me with disdain and intimidated me. The emotional pain was powerful. After all, here I am at age 66 and I still clearly remember it.

But…I got over it. The fear I experienced led me to find ways to cope and helped shape me into the more resilient adult I am today. I sympathize with those who have been bullied, by parents, neighbors, coworkers, classmates, gang members, and those who threatened serious harm. I’m not sure I’ve ever met anyone who wasn’t bullied at some time, in some ways. It is a part of human society that will likely never go away.

If you examine any society or gathering of mammals you will discover a form of bullying. It is the assertion of testosterone that establishes roles: leader-follower, alpha male/female, etc. Sure, it is rude and obnoxious, but it is also just a part of nature. When we try to eliminate it with anti-bullying rules or heavy enforcement of sanctions and punishment then we are just bullying the bullies into submission. This does not eliminate the impulse to bully; it merely suppresses it for the moment.

To change a behavior, to truly change it so that you don’t have to hire security personnel to keep it at bay, you must diminish the cause or impulse that leads to that behavior. In other words, you must remove the urge to bully in order to stop it. The trouble is; we don’t have a good solution for removing that impulse. So we have to learn to manage the behaviors that emerge from it. But still, our current approach is not likely to help. Bullies will just say, “No more, or what? What are you going to do?”

When multiple celebrities and revered leaders speak out against bullying or when the White House makes public announcements condemning it, the impulse still exists. Kids and adults will still bully others, but they will be more covert in their methods or choice of locations. Our good intentions are, I’m afraid, mostly wasted on the perpetrators. They don’t get it, but they do learn to hide better.

When we say, “No More!” or “Just Stop It!” we are expressing our good intentions but the only people listening to us are our fellow victims. Bullies don’t acquiesce just because we demand they do so. They only back off when some equal or greater power pushes back. It’s not often appropriate to push back in physical ways so we have to learn to deal with bullies more strategically. At first, avoidance is a good tactic, but more is needed.

This is how we learn to survive and advance in human culture. We need the fears, threats and resistance that the world gives us in order to learn to become self-sufficient adults with the strength to advance in life. You can’t hire a bodyguard to always keep you safe nor can you hire a fitness surrogate to lift your weights for you. Strength, both physical and emotional, must be developed through the direct encounters with resistance. We need scary people to help us learn to be less afraid. If everyone were mild mannered, inclusive and supportive then nobody would become emotionally strong nor interpersonally skilled. We develop the courage to cope when we need to cope, not just off-line in a non-threatening environment.

That may sound uncaring and harsh, but I assure you that it is not. I have been the victim of bullies, but I no longer am. You needn’t be either.

When you next witness bullying, intervene. When you feel the urge to dominate, disengage and chill. When you are being bullied, change the energy between you and the bully. Life is too short to allow it to fill up with anger, fear and resentment.

P.S. One of those former bullies is now my good friend.
