Case Studies

Created a Professional Education System  
The National Speakers Association had no professional education system despite being a professional society of experts. I researched associations and professional societies across multiple industries and crafted a system of eight vital competencies, now expressed in four easy to recall categories: Ethics, Eloquence, Enterprise and Expertise. We reviewed all the archives of recordings from earlier meetings (hundreds of them) and created a huge educational resource tagged by competency area. Then I designed a way for all of the meetings, publications, training, selection of faculty and conventions to be used to certify attendees in each of the competencies, ultimately resulting in qualification to be certified with the CSP, Certified Speaking Professional designation. There are now hundreds of CSPs worldwide and NSA’s education system has won national awards in the association community.
Founded a Regional Leadership Development Alliance 
9-11-2001 stopped all non-military air traffic and none of knew if life would return to normal soon. I pulled together the leaders of the region where I live in Ventura Country California and created the (highway) 101 Leaders Alliance. This included 27 miles of communities along Hwy 101 near Los Angeles. 12 communities and about 700,000 people. My leadership committee included the Ventura County Sheriff, deans of three universities, civic leaders, and more. The goal was to develop Ground Level Leadership in all 12 communities rapidly. We joined resources, held a leadership summit in Thousand Oaks, and began a series of leadership seminars throughout the area. I brought in bestselling authors, friends and colleagues who were hall of fame speakers and I personally conducted training programs to teach people how to organize volunteers, locate resources, alleviate fears, motivate people, and get a job done without a big budget or known leaders. We were featured on NBC TV, in magazines and newspapers and celebrated throughout the region for our results.
Developed a High Level Discussion Series for member engagement  
The country club wanted their members to connect with each other more meaningfully. I created a Parlor Discussion “Salon” Series where I brought in amazing and famous people as guests, led fascinating discussions with groups of about 20 to 30 people at a time, and shared dinner discussions after. This went on for many years resulting in 36 separate discussion events with astronauts, philosophers, authors, celebrities, billionaires, entrepreneurs, athletes, musicians and professional speakers. This was provided by the country club as a member service and I was the host and discussion leader who found the guests, chose the topics and guided the experiences.
Got all departments to start working together enthusiastically  
My country club wanted a motivation speech to get their 250 people in different departments to work together better. I suggested a better solution. We created a customized Signature Training for them that brought everyone together, honored even the least paid among them, showed them the outcomes they were being paid to produce (instead of just the processes or functions) and got them to be enthusiastic about and proud of their jobs.
Created a signature training program for an international franchise  
After hiring me to deliver a business building seminar, the company (a business format franchise company) hired me on annual contract to create a customized sales training system for their industry, to keynote their annual convention, to interview their top producers and craft a series of reports on best practices. This contract continued for many years. Years later when the founder of the company had retired he called to thank me for playing such an important role in his life and career. That is what I call a meaningful outcome!
Helped a colleague grow his staff and his practice  
My colleague was a somewhat successful speaker but had not built a business nor trained his small staff to sustain that success. He bought my Professional Speaker System of DVDs and CDs to use for staff training and he attended my Speakers Summits to sharpen his own skills in all eight key competencies essential to business success. This led to his ability to get books published, be more confident on the speaking platform, and rest more easily because his staff now realized that their job was to make him better at his job.
Became a strategic advisor and key leader to a national association  
A automotive association asked me to sit in on a best practices meeting, that led to them asking to buy several boxes of my book “Relationship Selling” to distribute at their big industry Expo in Las Vegas. Then they invited me to speak at the conference and hired me for the next year to deliver their convention keynote. They had me recommend their other speakers and advise them on best strategies for motivation and training in business skills for their members. Then they hired me to train their HQ staff every quarter, meet with their 2 top execs three times a year for strategy sessions and write an article for their industry magazine. I’ve been with them more than 5 years now and have authored 60 articles, delivered multiple presentations and became good friends with their leaders.
Grew an insurance agency to national prominence  
I delivered a speech on goal setting to a struggling Mass Mutual insurance agency of 19 agents. They asked me to come back to train their staff. Then they hired me to become their on-site sales and personal growth coach, plus confidant and advisor to the new General Agent. This led to 6 years during which I officed with them and gave them 16 days a year of services in exchange for the office space. Additionally with the 19 agents we grew sales from $17 million in coverage per year to $231 million in coverage. As a result I was hired by 30 other agencies in the same company (out of 125), we won the President’s Trophy twice and I was hired by the home office to craft training programs. That was decades ago and last year 2016, I took the General Agent, now retired, to China for 10 days as my guest. We are still close friends after a generation has passed.
Helped a doctor become a professional speaker and consultant  
I helped an emergency room Doctor to develop a series of speeches and services that he can offer via keynote speeches and seminars. We took his experience and expertise, identified the most lucrative buyers for his services, crafted a message and style that suited them and refined his brand. In addition to this I helped him believe in himself more strongly so that his confidence soared.
