Years ago, Jim’s son Jim Jr. took a position at the Four Seasons. The pay was not the draw. Jim told him: “You don’t go to work at the Four Seasons for what they’ll pay you. You go for who you will become.”

Jim Jr. is now the General Manager of the Santa Barbara Inn, with a career built on exactly that principle. The credential he left with from the Four Seasons was not a salary increase. It was a standard of excellence, a network, and a way of operating that compounded for three decades.
