Speaker A 00:05 Welcome to a thoughtful discussion of important ideas among people who are committed to succeeding in life. This is a gathering of leaders from a variety of industries, and our role here is to help you reach the top 1% of your field of choice. I'm Jim Cathcart. So come with me and let's discover how much more successful you could be. Hey, welcome to the Professional Experts Podcast. I'm Jim Cathcart, your host and today's guest is John Mitchell. Let me give you a little background on John. The people involved in the world of motivation and success achievement, almost invariably they've read this book or run across it at one time or another. This is a first edition copy of the famous Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. And that is the most read success book anywhere. And I'm talking seriously, way ahead of all the others. If you look at all the other books on success motivation, they the number of readers they have is like 10% or less of the readers of this book. And why John Mitchell today? Well, John Mitchell's a neighbor, lives right over the hill from me. He's a dear friend, he's a colleague, and he's a man I admire. And there's another reason. He has discovered the missing secret from the book Think and Grow Rich. Because when you think about it, if millions upon millions of people have read the book Think and Grow Rich, then clearly those people have thought. So why didn't they all grow rich? Well, a lot of people have been guessing at why that is. John actually knows. He literally knows what the missing secret in the book that it refers to often but never spells out what it really is. So, John, welcome aboard. Thank you for being a certified professional expert and part of our world of specialists who are trying to make the rest of the world better. Jim Cathcart 02:33 Jim, that's the best introduction I think I've ever gotten. Speaker A 02:37 Good. Well, I pride myself in introducing skills. Jim Cathcart 02:42 Well, I think our audience today is going to find, most of them are going to find it interesting. But let me make a bold prediction, if you don't mind. Speaker A 02:52 Okay. Jim Cathcart 02:53 I'm thinking that some of your audience, the audience that is driven, will find what we're going to talk about, life changing. Speaker A 03:01 Yep. Now, that's an important distinction, folks. He said some of the audience will find it life changing. Why wouldn't everybody? For the same reason that people read the book and feel motivated, but their life doesn't change. See, only a tiny percentage, 2% or so of the population are really committed to succeeding. It's like the other day I was having a Conversation with Brian Tracy, famous motivational speaker and a CPE like John and the others. Brian said, you know, for years I studied self made millionaires and I learned the secrets of self made millionaires. But I didn't become a millionaire until I decided to become a millionaire. So it's one thing to know all about them, be able to articulate exactly how it works. It's quite another when you decide to achieve something. And that's usually done only by a very tiny sliver of the population. And that's who John specializes in serving, because he's got the answer. He literally does. I mean, this is not just a couple people saying, oh, look, I've got a twist on this that I think people will like. No, John's applied it in his personal life. He's coached other people in very highly placed positions in the use of it in their life and seen similar transformations take place. So bring us through that journey. John, tell us about this. Jim Cathcart 04:36 Well, when I turned 50, as you know, I just wasn't as successful as I thought I should be. And I really. Speaker A 04:44 Restaurants. And then you. You'd been a leader, right? Jim Cathcart 04:48 Sure, sure. And, and yeah, I started my career as a cpa. And you know, by the time I got to be 30, I, I realized I didn't want to be an accountant all my life. No offense to the accountants out there, but. So I became an entrepreneur at 30 and was in seven different businesses in my 30s and 40s. And Jim, when I got to be 50, though, I just wasn't as successful as I thought I should be. And I had two goals in my life. The, the first one was find the. To make enough money so I didn't have to, to work. And as materialistic as this sounds, at 50, I realized that I had to start netting $1 million a year if I was going to have the exceptional life always dreamed of. And, you know, I've been living a life of typically making 200 grand a year for 20 years. And so not bad, but not close to a million. Right. And then on the other goal was to find the woman of my dreams. And at 50, I was falling short on that. I was, you know, yeah, I'd never been married and did a lot of interviewing, but there's another word for that, interviewing. Well, so you and some of my other friends call it begging, but which, which always irritates me, but I understand it probably, you're probably right. It was probably closer to begging. Speaker A 06:16 More, more tactfully, I would call it dating. Jim Cathcart 06:19 Yes, yes, maybe so. But you Know it. So at 50, I'm falling short of both my goals. I'm like, how am I going to change things? And a pearl of wisdom comes me, like three months after turn 50, go find the top book, the world on success and apply that book literally word for word to my life. And so I'm like, okay, that's, that's interesting. That's a good idea. So I do the research and I discover what you've already shared that like 150 million people have read Think and Grow Rich. It's the top book of the world on success by a factor of 10. And I'm like, this is perfect. I can't believe how perfect this is. And so I rush out and buy the book and read the book. And Jim, then I discover the problem. Book says there's a secret for success, but as you well know, it only gives you half of the secret. And so I'm bummed out and I mope around for probably three weeks. And then one day just get up and go, John, man up. Figure out the damn secret. And so, Jim, I immersed myself in the book, I probably read it 20 times over two or three months and was ultimately blessed to figure out the, the full secret and a 12 minute day technique to apply it. And so I start applying it to a new business I was starting in the reverse mortgage field. Speaker A 07:50 And let me get you to pause for a second. Jim Cathcart 07:52 Okay. Speaker A 07:52 A 12 minute a day process for implementing it. That, my friend, is noteworthy. Wow. So you're applying this in the reverse mortgage business. Jim Cathcart 08:07 Right. And so I started applying it, something I'd never done before in terms of this new approach to creating success. And quickly my income starts doubling and doubling and doubling to where about four or five years later, I'm, I'm blessed to be netting 25 times the 200 to 300 grand a year I was making the prior 20 years. And of course I felt so blessed. But the. Jim, as I've shared with you many times, what was particularly cool about it was I could see why it was happening. I was just playing the game of life at a higher level. I could do things I could never do before. I had a level of control over my life I'd never experienced before. And I just became fascinated by the fact that you could take two key scientific principles and apply them to your life and so materially impact your success. And so about 10 years ago, I finally had enough money so I didn't have to work. And so I sold my company. And a couple months after I sold my Company as I'm like, okay, I'm going to share this with the world. I meet the former chancellor and president at the University of Texas, who I've introduced you to. And, and he says to me, he says, hey, you got to teach Texas and why don't we teach it together? And so that led to him introducing me to the athletic director and he said, well, I want to learn this 12 minute day technique. And that, that led to becoming the mental coach for the 18 head coaches. And so now today I wait, let's Speaker A 09:48 put a frame around that. Jim Cathcart 09:49 Okay, big deal. Speaker A 09:52 Now you're a graduate of the University of Texas, but you weren't a player in the broader sense of things. I'm not talking about a sports player. Jim Cathcart 10:00 Right. Speaker A 10:00 You know, a real shaker and mover at the University of Texas at this point. You're just a guy who graduated from there, you like the school and, and you're involved in the reverse mortgage business and you meet Bill Cunningham and then you and he start teaching a course together. Jim Cathcart 10:18 Right. Speaker A 10:19 Ut. Jim Cathcart 10:20 Right. Speaker A 10:21 By the way, just for our viewers that aren't familiar with the UT in the broader sense, tell them how substantial this university is. Jim Cathcart 10:29 Well, you know, a lot of people don't realize this, but two things. The University of Texas is the biggest brand in college sports, takes in more money than Notre Dame, Ohio State, all the big ones. And the second thing is, and, and this is what made what we're particularly proud of is we have won the Directors cup for the last five years, which is awarded to the, the top athletic program in the country out of all schools, based on wins and losses. And so, you know, that's a tribute really to the, the great coaches that we have at the University of Texas. Speaker A 11:04 And you now are in the position that you are a mindset skills coach to the coaches, the head coaches of all 18 of the various sports teams and including Coach Sarkeesian, the head of the football program and, and all those others. Wow. Jim Cathcart 11:24 Right? Speaker A 11:24 That's right. That's a big deal, John. Jim Cathcart 11:27 Well, it's, it's an honor. And like I was telling the athletic director, I'm like, let's make the University of Texas the gold standard for mental training and conditioning. I mean, you know, as I pointed out to him, I said, we're not going to have greater athletic performance from better nutrition or weight training is going to come from impacting the mind. Right. I mean, that's pure you. Speaker A 11:53 Yep, absolutely. And Scotty Scheffler from there and Jordan Spieth, both in. Jim Cathcart 11:59 Right. Speaker A 11:59 And then we could go on all day with Arch Manning and the, and the others, you know, in football and the other sports. So clearly what you stumbled onto works. It still blows my mind that you figured out a way to accomplish the application of it in a 12 minute process. Jim Cathcart 12:21 Right. Well, and think about this, Jim. And you and I, you know, I haven't talked about this lately, but look at how most people are doing life. If you ask them, how do you create success? Most of them have never really been asked that question and they will bumble around to answer it and, but what becomes apparent is they're just winging life. They don't, they don't really have an actual way of doing life. And the effect of that is they continually recreate their past. And, and if you really dig into that just a little deeper, I see that we all have two fundamental problems as human beings that we have to overcome. The first one is that we're innately wired for survival, which causes the vast majority of our thoughts to be fear based. Then the second fundamental problem as a human we have to overcome is that 95% of our daily thoughts and actions are unconscious. And so the effect of both those issues is when we open our eyes each morning, hey, we're on autopilot most of the day, and we're innately wired to be fear based, which stimulates that negative inner voice. Speaker A 13:40 Now, and it wouldn't. Most people say, I don't think so. You know, I'm, I'm pretty conscious. I go through my day and I, it can't be that 95% of my thoughts and behaviors are just an unconscious flow. Surely I'm more involved than that. What do you, how do you explain it to those folks? Jim Cathcart 14:04 Well, I'm glad you brought that up because that's exactly right. Because what, and you said it really well that most people would say, whoa, wait a minute. Yeah, I don't think, at least with me, most my daily actions are unconscious because I'm conscious of everything I do. So 100% of my actions are conscious. That couldn't be more wrong. And here's, here's what the science says. So what happens is you take actions and they are unconscious 95% of the time. And then like a microsecond or two later you become aware of it. And so the effect of that is, because it happens so almost simultaneously, you erroneously think that all of your actions were actually conscious actions. But I'm telling you, Jim, when you get this one concept, your life is never the same. Because when I look at what, what, 25x my income? It was getting this one concept. And I'll show you something cool that I think your audience would. Would like. Let's verify what I just said. What do you. What do you think? Speaker A 15:24 Do it. Jim Cathcart 15:25 So let's ask Chad. GPT. Let's see if I can get her up here. G, are you there? Speaker C 15:33 Fear. Jim Cathcart 15:35 So I understand that 95% of a person's daily actions are unconscious. Is that really true? Speaker C 15:46 Yes. It's widely accepted that a large portion of our daily actions are unconscious. Research suggests around 95% of our behaviors and thoughts are driven by subconscious processes. It's fascinating how much our unconscious mind influences our daily life. Right. Jim Cathcart 16:02 So I understand that what's really happening is you take an unconscious action and then a couple of milliseconds later, you become conscious of it. Is that what's going on? Speaker C 16:13 Often initiate actions unconsciously, and we become aware of them moments later. This happens so quickly that it feels like we're consciously controlling everything. But the initial trigger is often subconscious. Jim Cathcart 16:25 So can you give me two examples of this? Speaker C 16:29 One example is driving a car on a familiar route. You might find yourself arriving at your destination without remembering every turn you made. Another example is typing on a keyboard. You're often not consciously thinking about where each key is, but your fingers automatically find the right positions. Jim Cathcart 16:46 Okay, thank you. Well, Jim, so let's dig into this a little deeper because I see that the epiphany of my life was understanding two things. First, that my daily actions determine my success in each area of my life, and 95% of my daily actions are unconscious. And so when you connect the dots, it was obvious to me that you had to gain control over those unconscious daily actions if you wanted to be. Speaker A 17:19 Could we say instinctive and be talking about the same thing as them being unconscious? Jim Cathcart 17:26 I don't know that they're the. That's the same thing. Do you think they're the same thing? Speaker A 17:30 Just. It just occurred to me that, you know, the non. The ones that are outside of the usual rational thought process, it just be a quick response. Like in traffic, if somebody scares the daylights out of you, you know, by driving dangerously, you're either going to respond with. With fear or anger. Jim Cathcart 17:51 Right. Speaker A 17:52 A lot of people scream at you, you know, or honk their horn. Other people will just go, oh, oh, man, that, you know, that was close. And they pull over. But. But those responses are emotional responses. But you also look at that, the idea of driving to work and you don't have to think about Every step you just have to be conscious of it's happening, aware of it happening. Jim Cathcart 18:16 Well, and think about this. Whether you're talking about your marriage or your health or your, your career, the daily actions that you're taking are going to determine your success. And if 95% of them are unconscious and they're getting made without your conscious decision and in fact are being made based on a autopilot is wired to be fear based and reactive because you're wired for survival. Yeah, that's a formula for disaster. That's, that's what creates the average life and that's what creates a life that, that is not exceptional. And, and when you can take control. Speaker A 18:58 Yeah. Jim Cathcart 18:59 You know, by this 12 minute day technique that I'll explain in a little more detail, when you take control of those unconscious daily actions, then the right actions happen automatically without thinking. Speaker A 19:12 Okay, Yeah, I can see that. It's like an actor or a performer on stage. I've heard some people say. So you, when you rehearse, I noticed you're rehearsing just as if it were a live show. So it's a full on rehearsal. What's up with that? You want to rehearse until you get it right. And the answer that I heard in this one instance I'm thinking of was no, I want to keep doing it until I can't get it wrong. Jim Cathcart 19:41 Yeah, yeah. The big yeah. Speaker A 19:44 We do it till you can get it right versus do it until you almost can't get it wrong. Jim Cathcart 19:50 Right. Well, you know, back to something we said previously. As I was telling you, there's these two fundamental problems that we have to overcome of being. I have to overcome being wired for survival and we have to overcome 95% of our thoughts being unconscious. You know, so the, the effect of that is it's, it really is, it's an ineffective, lousy way to live. And, and I can say that because I lived that life for 50 years. And, and there's nothing pulling you forward to your desired life. And what the solution though is, and this is the essence of the secret of thinking real rich, is you create immense clarity about your life. Exactly the person you want to be, exactly what you want to accomplish, and precisely how you're going to achieve your clearly defined goals. And, and so you feed that clarity to yourself every day. And, and after about 21 days, your autopilot gets rewired and then the right actions start happening automatically without thinking, and you have this powerful force pulling you forward to your desired life. Does that make sense? Speaker A 21:04 Yes, it does so through a conscious discipline of daily reinforcing the image you want in all these various areas. You, at first, you just inform yourself, and then it becomes something you have done regularly enough that it's starting to feel comfortable. And then at some point, there's a tipping point and it becomes the new instinct. Jim Cathcart 21:30 Yeah. Speaker A 21:30 It's like in Charles Duhigg's book, the Power of Habit. He talks about how habits are, you know, like a little strand of spider web. You lay one or two strands, it's so weak a wisp of wind could blow it away. But start laying 15, 20, 30 of them together. Next thing you know, you got a string and then a rope and then a cable and then a bar, you know. Jim Cathcart 21:55 Right. Speaker A 21:55 It's. That's the new way. So. Jim Cathcart 21:58 Right. Speaker A 21:58 Thought. You know, the dendritic tissue and the synapses travel. Jim Cathcart 22:05 Right, Right. Well. And what's, you know, this may. May be going slightly deeper than people want, but. But I personally find this interesting that what you're doing, when you're feeding the succinct articulation of your desired life to yourself each day, you're influencing the creation of your thoughts because every action you take, whether it's conscious or unconscious, has to be preceded by a thought. And so when you feed the succinct articulation of your desired life to yourself, each day, you're influencing the creation of your thoughts. So when the thoughts get created as you're living your. Your life, they're the right thoughts that generate the right actions. So the right actions happen automatically without thinking. Does that make sense? Speaker A 22:52 Yes. Yep. And by the way, can I. Can I get you to share the what I envision quote? Jim Cathcart 23:00 Yeah. Yeah. You want me to tell you what the full secret of thinking grow rich is? Speaker A 23:06 You bet. Jim Cathcart 23:06 And. Okay, well, and I'll tell you basically how I discovered it. And this was, like I said when I was 50, but you know, what I. What I sort of didn't tell you at 50 was that my mom was dying of pancreatic cancer. And. And so besides feeling the scarcity of time, I was, you know, feeling the loss of my mom. And. And so, Jim, every day after work, I'd go see her. I'd. She was in the hospital for like eight weeks. And I'd go see her and I'd hold her hand and I'd love on her. And it was everything I could do to keep from breaking down in front of her. And so I'd spend a couple hours with her and then I'd go in the cold, dark parking lot and cry my eyes out. And again, this going on for, like, eight weeks. And I had never experienced gut wrenching pain like this. And obviously I'm losing. I'm feeling the pain of losing my mom, But I just knew there was something deeper going on here. And what I realized, maybe not at the time, but I certainly see it now, but what was really going on was I felt like I was letting my mom down with my life. I mean, my mom and dad gave me everything. They sent me to Jesuit High School in Dallas. They sent me to the University of Texas. Pay for everything. And so as my mom is leaving this world, I'm sitting there and realizing that after all the advantages she had given me, all I had was the average life. And I hated the average life because I just knew I was capable of so much more. And what I later realized was that pain of feeling like I was letting my mom down was like rocket fuel and causing me to go deeper than any other person on the planet ever had to figure out the full secret of thinking grow rich. And around this time, that there was one night that was pivotal in figuring out the secret. And in. On this particular night, I'd gone and seen my mom and cried my eyes out in the hospital parking lot. But this particular night, it was. It was snowing. And. I don't know, I probably have never told you this story, have I? Speaker A 25:37 I don't think so. Jim Cathcart 25:38 So it just felt different that night. And so as I start to drive home, I see the big snowflakes hitting my windshield and. And again, just feels different. And so I get home and I plop myself in my nice comfy chair and I think, okay, I'm going to read some think and grow rich tonight. And so again, about probably the 20th time I've read it. And so on this particular night, I read that your success in life comes down to your daily actions. The cumulative effect of your daily actions in each area of your life determines your success. Well, I never thought of success in such simple terms, but I'm like, okay, I buy that. I certainly buy that. And then I read that 95% of your daily actions are unconscious. And when I first read that, I'm like, huh, I don't. I don't know if I'm believing this or not, but I'm. I'm the find it fascinating. And now I'm ready to go to bed, and I. I brush, brush my teeth and wash my face and. And get in bed, put my little head on the pillow, and Jim As I'm laying there, you know, I just can't stop thinking about 95% of my daily actions being unconscious. And then it sort of hits me. It says, I don't control my daily actions, yet those daily actions are the very thing that determines my success in life. And that moment truly was like a lightning bolt hitting me. And I remember, you know, sort of sitting up in bed looking at my backyard, and I see the glistening snow falling in my backyard. Very surreal moment. And then I think, well, then what controls my daily actions? Well, if 95% of them are unconscious, hey, it's my autopilot. It's my subconscious mind, and that is only responsive to repetition. And what was so particularly interesting about this is then I sort of realize, oh, I've only been controlling my intentions with my conscious mind, not my actions with my subconscious mind. And, and that's when it all clicked. That the reason I was underperforming was not because I lacked drive or intelligence, but rather I was underperforming because I had a false belief about success that I had had for 50 years. And that false belief was that I controlled my daily actions. That I controlled my daily actions. And I promise you, that's exactly the same false belief that virtually everybody in this audience has as well. Speaker A 28:36 Yeah. And we've been trained all our lives to think that we, we are in control of our daily action. Jim Cathcart 28:44 Right, right. And so I finally got it in my head, and that's when the full secret of thinking grow rich came to me. And the full secret is what you envision in detail with emotion on a daily basis is what shows up in your life. And let me say that again, what you envision in detail with emotion on a daily basis is what shows up in your life. And what that more precisely means is, is it again, you create immense clarity about your life, exactly the person you want to be, exactly what you want to accomplish, and precisely how you're going to achieve your clearly defined goals. And you create that clarity by putting it on a template that I created which organizes your clarity in each area of your life. And then you feed that clarity to yourself each day by either listening to it or reading it. Speaker A 29:46 Like a one page sheet and it's summarized and you keep it right there where you're going to see it every single day. Jim Cathcart 29:54 Right, right. And it's actually a two page sheet and I'll explain that a little more detail. But so all that clarity is put on one sheet front and back, and you feed it to yourself every day. And what Happens really is three things happen immediately you feel an immense sense of control over your life. Well, of course you would. You're feeding the succinct articulation of your desired life to yourself every day. Of course you're going to feel control. And then the second thing you feel is confidence, which is directly related to the control you feel. And the other thing that's interesting is you're creating immense order in the mind, and the mind thrives on order. And the effect of that order is it completely eliminates stress. I found. And my clients find. And then the third thing that you experience, now, this takes 21 days because you got to rewire the Autopilot. But after 21 days, then the right actions happen automatically, without thinking. And again, it only takes 12 minutes a day to. To do this once you create the Speaker A 31:10 clarity, the little strands that become the strength. Exactly, yeah, that sort of thing. I want to share something with you and our viewers. I'm peeling this off of my monitor. Okay. What this says is what I envision in detail with grateful optimism, which is emotion, on a daily basis will show up in my life. I took that directly from you, and it's in front of my face every single day as I'm looking at my computer. Jim Cathcart 31:45 You know, I love that. I think saying with gratitude is actually better than saying with emotion. Speaker A 31:52 Well, it just specifies which emotion. Jim Cathcart 31:55 Yeah, right way to say it. Speaker A 31:56 I said grateful optimism, but you could say with grateful expectation, because optimism is, you know, that the good will come, pessimism is expecting, the bad will come. But what I envision in detail with grateful expectation on a daily basis will show up in my life. Jim Cathcart 32:23 Right. Speaker A 32:24 Yeah, that's, you know, concerned that it's your voice saying that every time I read it. Jim Cathcart 32:30 Well, let me give the audience an example of this and, and then I'll explain the science at that. So here's a practical example of the right actions happening automatically. So, and this happened, I don't know, two or three years ago. A client of mine that lives in Portland decided to come to San Antonio and is around Christmas and he's with his girlfriend. He says, why don't you and Ginge come up and have dinner with us? And oh, by the way, I met my wife, Ginger, who Jim knows really well about, within two years of doing this methodology. And that was more impactful than 25xing my income. But nevertheless, so, so it, you know, it's Christmas time, I tell Ginger, I go show up at Starbucks at 2 o' clock and I end up getting it there a little early. And so I decide, what the heck is Christmas time? I'm going to have a, I'm going to have a brownie. So I, I start eating the brownie and I. One of the things I affirm in my 12 minute day technique is I'm aware of everything I put my mouth. Well, I'm aware of eating that brownie. I'm aware it doesn't taste very good, but I continue to eat that brownie. And then the ginge shows up and we get my car, drive to San Antonio and I tell her, boy baby, you know, I sort of lost my appetite. I don't feel very good. But we go. And that night when I come back to Austin, I change one word in my template from I'm aware of everything I put my mouth to I evaluate everything I put my mouth. And so the next night we go have Mexican food with her son and I order the tacos. The tacos come, they're not very good. But this time I'm evaluating everything I put my mouth and, and I slide those tacos away and don't have another bite. That all happens automatically, not, not consciously but, but unconsciously automatically. And Jim, when I was laying in bed that night, I'm like, boy, if that's not a superpower where you can get yourself to do the right actions automatically, I don't know what is. So that's just an example of it. Speaker A 34:58 And by the way, just for everyone's awareness, Ginger, John's wife, one of the world's most delightful people and he calls her the ginge G I N G. So when he's saying ginge, it's not. Jim mispronounced, he's referring to his wife Ginger. Jim Cathcart 35:18 She is a character. Yes, yes, right, right. You know, the other thing that I think is worth share with your audience. So, so now we're, we're getting a little deeper into this. Here's how the human mind works. And keep in mind my life changed when once I understood this had the fundamentals of how the human mind works. Well, conscious mindset, your intention and is influenced by logic. Subconscious mind controls your everyday actions, essentially 95% of your actions. And it's only influenced by repetition. And the example that I'd like to use is losing weight. Conscious mindsets, the intention to lose weight based on the logic of the health benefits. But the reason people fail to lose weight obviously is not from lack of intention. It's from lack of influencing the part of their brain that is controlling their daily actions of eating and Exercising. And that's the subconscious mind, and it only responds to repetition. So you can see the power of feeding the succinct articulation of your desired life to yourself each day, because that's also articulating the right actions. And that's why after 21 days, hey, the right actions happen automatically. It is so profoundly simple. Speaker A 36:46 I love that. I love that. So, gosh, there's so many directions to go with this, but let's just, let's give folks an easy way to get started with this so that they can begin to apply this and start feeling and seeing the kind of results that you saw. Jim Cathcart 37:06 Well, you know, one thing is probably worthwhile is to explain that template. You know, we, we almost went, went there. So here's how the, what the template looks like. It's like I said, it's is to two pages. But on the front is the ideal you and the five key areas of your life. Yourself, your health, your romantic relationship, your spirituality, and your career. So ideal you in those five areas on the front page. On the back, same five areas. But you're going to list the improvements you want in each area of your life. And, and you're going to have your goals. You have one goal for your career, one goal for your romantic relationship, one goal for your health. And, and you're going to be living your life quarter by quarter now. So you're going to have these goals by the quarter, and so you'll, you Speaker A 37:57 change them and update them from time to time. Jim Cathcart 37:59 Well, if the start of every new quarter, you're going to have a new goal. Speaker A 38:03 Yeah. Jim Cathcart 38:04 And, and you're going to define. And really, this came from your good friend Brian Tracy. This is where I got it. You define, here's the goal, here's the why behind the goal. Here's the three or four key behaviors associated with the goal. Here's the timeframe and measurement. The timeframe is already always the end of the quarter, but the measurement, you know, you'll decide, how am I going to measure it? And the latest iteration to this. So that's how the, how the template is set up. And to make it super simple for your audience to do this, I created an AI algorithm where all they got to do is answer about 50 questions, press a button, and 10 seconds later, the template is customized to your life. And so it makes it super easy to create the clarity that is required to influence the subconscious mind. Speaker A 39:00 There's that think it be it dot com. Jim Cathcart 39:05 No, it said actually go to themissingsecret.org okay, that's, that's where I've got a Speaker A 39:14 nine minute secret dot org. Jim Cathcart 39:16 Okay, yes, the missingsecret.org and I got a nine minute video that explains this. And you can also buy my book there. But that's essentially how it works. Speaker A 39:29 They should buy your book. Jim Cathcart 39:31 Right, Right, right. Speaker A 39:33 Do you have a physical example of the template handy? Jim Cathcart 39:38 I don't have one in front of me, but they can see it. But, you know, the thing I would like us to do and argue this with me because I, you know, I go on a lot of podcasts. Yeah. And, and what I see, Jim, and is when we get to this point, I'll say, okay, most significant thing I ever learned was that 95% of my daily thoughts and actions are unconscious. And I'm, I'm like, with the host, I want you and your audience to have the same epiphany. So let's try and create that. And so what happens, though, is I'll ask the host, do you believe this? And about half the time they'll say, yes, I do believe that 95% of my daily actions are unconscious. And I will then ask them, well, what are you doing about it? Well, they're not doing anything about it. And you help me on this. I'm like, how can you not be doing anything about it if you understand. Seems to me it's so easy to connect the dots that if your actions determine your success and you're not, and you realize that that's true, but you're not doing anything to control them, what's wrong here? You know, I mean, why? Speaker A 40:55 I have a theory on that. I believe the comfort of their rut is more important to them than the desire for the better outcomes because it would require discomfort for a while, you know, in the transition and changing your habit patterns. So implementing a new behavior intentionally, instead of just flowing into a new behavior, somehow instinctively that their resistance to that extra effort is greater than their pain of staying in the rut that they're in. And I loved Earl Nightingale's description of a rut. He said a rut. You know, your regular routine. Routine, by the way, is the root word behind rut, I think. Jim Cathcart 41:46 Right. Speaker A 41:47 A rut is a grave with both ends removed. Jim Cathcart 41:54 Well, you know, I think you are, are right and you know it. I know you have told you this story about meeting during Hardy, you know, five years ago when I wanted to, I thought, I'm boy, I'm going to share this with the top expert in the world, whoever he or she is. And Aside, Darren Hardy is a that person. And so I write a big check and go spend three days with him. I, the moment comes where I show him the template and I explain how it works. He says, wow, you know, John, this is really good. But people are not going to spend 12 minutes a day on this. And I'm like, Darren, how the heck can that be? It 25x my income. Time magazine did a cover story on the science behind it. And we're applying the central concept of the top book, the World on Success. And he said exactly, essentially what you just said. He says, john, for the vast majority of people, more success is merely a preference. Merely a preference. And he says, that's 98% of the people. The only people that are going to do this 12 minute technique are the driven people who just like you said, are driven to realize, oh, if I do something different, I might get radically different results. Speaker A 43:18 Now here's the guy we're talking about, Darren Hardy. This is one of his books, the Compound Effect, which by the way, is a very good book. Yeah, you're right, he is, he is one of the leading authorities in the field of personal development. Former owner of Success magazine, and he was the guy in charge of tstn, the Success Training Network, which was on tv, Right. For years I had a TV show as part of that and he was the sort of the main guy producing that. Jim Cathcart 43:54 But you know, it's, it's interesting to me. Once he told me that it was like, finally I got it because I was frustrated with sharing what I have created to the masses because I had, I made the erroneous assumption that everybody was just like me. Well, they're not like me. They're not like you. And once I got it through my thick head that what I've got is for the 2% and, and the other thing I sort of got in my head that this is my life experience, that you gotta have something that gives you an edge, an advantage in life, otherwise you're gonna get the average life. And once I got this advantage, this edge, and feeding the succinct articulation of my life to myself each day, whole new ball came in all areas of my life. And that's the cool thing about it. It's impacting your marriage at the same time, it's impacting your health and your career. So, you know, that's, that's why it really creates the exceptional life. Speaker A 45:03 Can you give us some, like, read some examples from the template that the people could use about this and then tell us you know, we're going to the missing. The missing secret dot org. Jim Cathcart 45:18 Right, right, right. Speaker A 45:19 Where they. That's where they can go and they can access the AI generated instrument and all that. You've got an app and all of that. Jim Cathcart 45:28 Correct, right, right. Well, and I'll. I'll give you a career example and a romantic relationship example. Like, like with. And this is off the top of my head, but every day I, first of all, I affirm that I love my precious wife, and I focus on her many good qualities, and I list what those qualities are. So every day I'm feeding to myself her many great qualities. And one of the things I also do is I affirm that I'm going to give her two compliments a day. And sort of how that works is like, we'll wake up together and just automatically, without thinking, I will just roll over and I'll say whatever comes in my head. Like, I can't believe I'm. I'm married to you. Or, or, you know, I adore you. Something, you know, just where you're. You're not fully awake. But it's just something that starts us off. So that's compliment number one. And that happens automatically, without thinking. Then in the evening, I hold myself accountable to giving her a compliment at dinner. And this one is more interesting because I have to figure out what compliment to give her. So what happens is I will be at. At dinner, and the idea will automatically come up to my head, give Ginger the second compliment. But now I got to engage my conscious mind to figure out what the compliment is. So I figure out whatever is a compliment that's going on with us at the moment, and I give her that compliment. But you can imagine if you're giving your spouse two compliments a day, the vibe that you're creating. And there's also things that. One of the things I've been really interested in lately that. I don't know if you would agree with this, but have you noticed every once in a while your spouse will say something so out left field that makes no sense at all? Have you ever experienced that? Speaker A 47:43 Well, no, of course not. Jim Cathcart 47:45 No. I know we have covered with Paula, Speaker A 47:47 but no, my spouse has the possibility of overhearing what we're saying right now, so. Of course not. John. There's never been. Jim Cathcart 47:58 Well, for the rest of us human beings, everybody has experienced that. And, like, what I affirm in my visualization is I go. When she says something that makes absolutely no sense, I'm like, that's the estrogen talking. And for you women listening, I know the same things happen, that sometimes your husband says stuff that makes no sense to you. Hey, that's the testosterone talking. And, but I see when, when and, and you know, I also affirm that if she ever says anything irritating that I notice my irritation. Just notice my irritation before I respond. And I have trained myself to make that happen automatically. And it's amazing what happens when you create that hesitation to have something come out of your mouth. Then you actually listen to what they're saying. And in the vast majority of times, you're not irritated anymore just by our irritation. Speaker A 49:06 Is it is. It's related directly to what intent we apply to that. We say, well, John said X, he was judging me or Jim, why he's condescending or yeah, we're assigned something to it that's not necessarily there and that's the thing that ticks us off. And so, yeah, onto that instead of what actually took place. Jim Cathcart 49:36 Right, right. But you can see this point of your success in life comes down to your daily actions. Those are the daily actions in, in your romantic relationship that when you can influence them, it changes the dynamics of the relationship. Speaker A 49:51 Yeah. And it's about, just as for the people that are listening to this, somewhat superficially, it's not about giving those compliments. It's about expressing genuine appreciation. The compliment is simply a vehicle for doing that. So if you get in the habit of twice a day saying, hey, your hair looks nice and that's a pretty dress, that's going to be seen as, as meaningless. Jim Cathcart 50:17 Right. Speaker A 50:18 Time or two. But if you say, I appreciate the time you spend making sure we have a pleasant meal, you know. Jim Cathcart 50:27 Yeah. Speaker A 50:28 The time you spend helping me understand what our kids are going through when they're acting up, you know, when you're expressing a genuine appreciation, that's a big difference from simply giving a person a compliment. That is a checklist item. Jim Cathcart 50:49 Right. Speaker A 50:49 Nice job. Gym check. Jim Cathcart 50:53 Exactly. Yeah. Yeah, you nailed it. And, and I'll give you an example on career. And keep in mind, because I grew up as a cpa, I'm analytical. And so when I was blessed to me making 5 million a year after 20 years of, of 200 grand a year, I'm like, why is this really happening? And I saw that it came down to essentially two things. The first thing is I saw that I was doing three high performance skills that I was never doing in my 30s and 40s. And the first of those three skills was I was highly organized, meaning I was planning my day the night before. And I was time blocking my day. And today what I see with so many entrepreneurs and people in general is that if you ask them to rate themselves on a scale of 1 to 10 for organization, they'll say they're a 5 or a 6. Well, you're not going to be highly successful if you're a friggin five or six. You got to up your game. And I got a very simple system that, that and the forms where you plan your day the night before you time block your day. So that is step one for, for being highly successful. Then the second high performance skill was this idea of setting aside time to deep think two times a week. You know, this is something the top entrepreneurs in the world like Bill Gates and, and Elon Buss do. And but I wasn't deep thinking when I was in my 30s and 40s, you know, I was just winging life and, and trying the best I could. And then the third high performance skill was being a conduit of learning that. And it was both constraint consistent every week, but also it was strategic relative to exactly what I wanted to accomplish. So all of a sudden I start doing those three skills and then I couple that with articulating six things about my business. I would articulate my business plan, my sustained strategy for success, my two or three things that move the needle, where I wanted my business to be three years from now, the four or five milestones to get there and the linchpin issue to go to the next level. And from feeding all that to myself every day, I continually understood myself and my business at a deeper and deeper level. And that's what 25x my income was. I was doing the right key behaviors and I was understanding my business at a level way beyond I'd ever than before. Speaker A 53:44 And as pardon the interruption, but just pulling one item out of that list, that's a substantial list you just went over. This item alone could change people's life. Do if I doing the three things that move the needle financially. Jim Cathcart 54:02 Right. Speaker A 54:03 Wow. You know how many of the things we do in a day or things we do for feel good instead of do better. Jim Cathcart 54:13 Right? Exactly. Exactly. Well and you know, in my organizational system I have you, I highlight what are the three things that move the needle today? And so that you see, you see all the stuff you're going to do today but the top three things that move the needle are highlighted so that by God those things happen and you're focused on them and, and you're focused on what do you have to do not not what's going to move the needle in the company. What are you. What moves the needle? What activities that you're taking. Move the needle. Speaker A 54:51 Mm. Jim Cathcart 54:53 And it's got to be specific. The subconscious mind only responds to things that are specific. Speaker A 54:58 And if it's not specific is not personal. If it is not personal, then it's just like reading a book on a subject you're not invested in. Right. Jim Cathcart 55:07 But I think maybe what I bring to the human achievement field is I see that, that there are a lot of brilliant people, as you well know, in the success and human achievement field and great strategies. But I think people, people have strategies coming out their ears. They need to get great strategies to show up in their thoughts and actions automatically. And I don't see anybody else in the, in the success field teaching an actual way of doing life. And, and that's what I feel like I bring to. Yeah, to the, the space. Speaker A 55:45 And so you've taken the time to flesh this out so that you have an app that makes people, you have a template so that people answer the questions and fill that in a very short period of time and then they can print it out and keep it in front of them every day and spend their 12 minutes reading and, or reciting or whatever, you know, reviewing that. And then you've got lessons, little micro lessons that you've created on video so that when someone logs into your system and gets their information input, they're inputted there, I suppose, be the word. Then reminders and little guidance tips are fed to them by email. So right to you on fleshing this out, because when we first met a few years ago, almost several years ago now, it was in the birthing stages. And now then it's. It's pretty mature and very impressive. Jim Cathcart 56:46 Well, and I tell you, it's. I've been doing this for 10 years and only in the last three have I really got it figured out. Speaker A 56:54 If you're like, and the book is excellent, there's my friend John and there's the ISBN number and everything. They won't be able to read that. Jim Cathcart 57:06 Right, right. Speaker A 57:08 We go to the missing secret of the legendary book Think and Grow Rich by Joe Mitchell. Jim Cathcart 57:15 And so I got one final story that maybe be a good way to close on. About three or four years ago, I became a grandfather for the first time. And so the day after our granddaughter was born and I coerced my, my stepdaughter Hannah, to name the baby after the Ginge. And so, so we've got the Ginge too, I guess. And so we go over there the day after this little precious baby girl was born. Of course, there's a lot of oohing and eying. And we're at Hannah's house, and Ginger and Hannah hand me the baby and walk away. And I'm holding this precious little girl that's a day old. And I'm holding her close to my chest, and I feel the warmth of her body. And Jim, tears start streaming down my. My face. And I'm realizing just how precious this life is. And I realize that she's going to live to be 100 years old. And the. The quality of her life and the impact of her life is going to come down to the thoughts that are going on in her head most of the time. And so at that moment, I made the commitment that, by God, I'm going to. I'm going to influence those thoughts as she evolves and grows. Grows up into adulthood. But here's the lesson for your audience. Your life is precious. Your life is precious. And as you put your head on the pillow tonight, just think about this. If the next five years are like the last five years, will you be happy with that? And if the answer is no, you got to stop just winging life. You now have a way to change it. And it takes 12 minutes a day to create the life you want. Speaker A 59:27 Wow. That definitely drives it home. Jim Cathcart 59:31 Wow. Speaker A 59:33 The missingsecret.org that's the place to go.
