Preparing for the Fall

Years ago my wife and I took a long motorcycle ride up the California Coast from La Jolla where we lived. We were both dressed in full leathers for safety and comfort on the journey. In Venice Beach (Los Angeles) we stopped for lunch. As we took off our helmets a pedestrian said, “I see you are dressed for the fall.”

It was summertime and I assumed he meant that we were dressed for Autumn, a season that would require warmer clothing. Then it occurred to me that his comment could be taken two ways. 1. a comment re: the weather and our leathers. Or 2. we were dressed for safety in the event of a fall.

Are you prepared for “The Fall”?

You already know that business cycles, just like climate seasons, are totally predictable. We know they are coming, though we might not know exactly when they will arrive. Knowing they are coming allows us to plan and prepare. As I write this we are entering Summer in the USA, but I KNOW that Fall is coming. In the southern hemisphere this is Winter, and they KNOW that Spring is coming! What’s next for you? Are you ready for it?

There’s another type of “fall” to consider. What if sales fall in the next cycle? What if there is a drop in profit margins, available talent for hiring, interruptions in your supply chain? These are also predictable. We know they will occasionally happen but not exactly when nor how severe they will be. But still, they are predictable. You can plan NOW to be ready for them. And sometimes, your planning just might prevent a fall from occurring.

So, are you ready for the Fall?
